Italy, officially known as 'Repubblica Italiana' is a country lying to the south of Europe. Within its political boundary fall two of the largest islands of the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. The Vatican City and San Marino are independent entities within the political boundaries of Italy. To the north of Italy lie the Alpine ranges. The northern boundary of Italy is shared with other countries like Slovenia, France, Austria and Switzerland. There are a thousand things about Italy that would draw a tourist's attention to the country.
Italy has a history dating back to the prehistoric times. The country has been a witness to several great civilizations. Italy has been ruled by such great empires as the Etruscans and the Romans and in a later part the Byzantine Empire as well.

The Dolomiti peaks of the north also provide tourists with an ideal destination for skiing.
