Florence is a beautiful Italian city situated on the tranquil banks of the Arno River. Florence is famous all over the world as the cradle of the Renaissance that rocked the world during the 15th and the 16th century. The city, which presently is the capital of the Tuscany province, was once the capital of Italy as well. Florence has an enriched literary as well as cultural heritage that makes it so famous. Florence's art and architecture has been influenced by such great maestros like Botticelli, Donatello and Michaelangelo. Florence has a long and eventful history. The city was founded in the 59 B.C by the Romans. It had been conquered by the Lombards in the 6th century, when Florence came out of the darkness of the Middle Ages. Slowly, the political power of Florence shifted to the hands of the noble families, the first of them being the Medici. The Medicis ruled over the entire province of Tuscany for three centuries. During this time Florence was known as the cultural capital of Europe. Great scholars, sculptors and painters created many a brilliant piece of art in that era.
The great buildings and structures of Florence, stand with grace till date, and remind us of the glory of the bygone era. The most important architectural gem of Florence is the “domed” cathedral of Florence. The Santa Maria Del Fiore, as it is officially known, is also called the “Duomo”. The splendid dome was constructed by Filippo Brunelleschi, another of the great artists of Florence. Other attractions near the Dome are the Campanile tower and the Baptistery building. The famous Piazza de Signoria houses one of the most famous creations of Bartolomio Ammanati, the Fountain of Neptune.
The bridges of Florence are no less famous than the grand architectural gems of the city. The Ponte Vecchio, Ponte Santa Trinita and the Ponte alle Grazie are the famous bridges of Florence. The Medici Chapel located in San Lorenzo. It is another brilliant piece of architecture, which contains the mausoleum of the Medici family.
