Rome

Rome is one of those European cities which have tremendous historical significance attached to it. Several legends shroud the establishment of the city itself. According to the most popular legend two brothers, Remus and Romulus founded this city. Archaeological evidences though point towards a pastoral settlement which led to the creation of this city. Since its very inception it has been the capital city of Italy, a glory which it is carrying with it, still now. Rome has seen the rise and fall of several empires. From the Roman kingdom to the Roman senate and further down to the Roman Empire, Rome has been a witness to many upheavals in the history of Europe. At present Rome is the capital city and the most densely populated commune of Italy.

It is one of the major economic hubs of the world. It is also one of the major tourist destinations within Europe. The Historic Center of Rome has been enlisted in the list of World Heritage sites by UNESCO. Rome has two major airports located within a distance of about 30 kilometers from the famous city center of Rome. The two airports are - Fiumicino International Airport and the Ciampino Airport. Among these two the first airport handles most of the international crowd.



Located at the confluence of the Aniene and the Tiber rivers, Rome has often been touted as “The Eternal City”. What makes Rome such a popular tourist destination is its incredibly beautiful Piazzas, splendid fountains, good food and a brilliant atmosphere.

The major tourist destination of Rome include:
  • The Colosseum – The world famous structure of the Colosseum is one of the seven wonders of the world. The structures was built for fights between gladiators and animals and for human sacrifices. The arena was made large enough to accommodate about 50,000 spectators. The underground portion of the Colosseum contains cubicles and paths, leading to the arena. These were used to bring the animals, gladiators and the human sacrifices to the arena.
  • Piazza Campidoglio on the Capitoline Hill – A structure belonging to ancient Rome, the Piazza Campidoglio, till date remains a symbol of power. The Piazza Campidoglio on top of the Capitoline Hill, has a remarkable structure the Palazzo Senatorio which has a double staircase designed by Michelangelo.
